Buddha was a man who embarked on the search for truth and experienced enlightenment. Buddhism is a faith with an emphasis on each individual looking at and thinking about our own lives. Buddhism shows us how to understand ourselves and how to cope with our daily problems. Buddha believed that all the sorrow of the world was caused by selfishness. He believed the secret to life is love. This month, we share delightful Zen stories and focus on the basics of the teachings of Buddha.
Week #1: Release and Love- Release desires/wants and concentrate on love of yourself and others. We celebrate Buddha’s life this month on Nirvana Day (February 8 or 15). Nirvana is the idyllic spiritual condition, the ultimate goal of a Buddhist.
  • Who was Buddha?
  • What did Buddha teach?
Week #2: Generosity: Love In Action-  We focus on the basics of the teachings of Buddha, the master teacher of the Buddhist faith. This week’s story is ‘The Most Important Thing’, a tale of a man who travelled many miles to hear from Buddha the key to the most important thing in life.
  • Buddha believed that selfishness is the cause of the world’s woes
  • Being kind to self and others brings happiness
Week #3: Stillness: Feeling the Presence - This week’s story, “A Heavy Load”,  has been told by Zen Buddhist for hundreds of years. It is a classic story of how our minds and thoughts are within our control. We control how we feel, how we react and the circumstances of our life. Buddhists believe that the best way to exercise this practice of mindfulness is through the practice of meditation. Through meditation, we gain control of our mind and how we think and act.
  • Meditation is a way to exercise your power to manage your thoughts.
  • You have control over how you think and act.
Week #4: Feeling Compassion- Feel compassion with a generous heart, kind speech and a life of service. This week we share the story, “The Farmer’s Luck”, which has roots in Taoism, going back several thousand years. It is a wonderful illustration of how the value that we attach to events in our lives can affect our peace of mind. By having compassion for others in all circumstances, we can stay present to the current moment.
  • Do not overrate what you have received, nor envy others.
  • He who envies others does not obtain peace of mind.

October's lessons use song, dance and stories from Buddhist, Muslim, Jewish and Native American traditions. For Halloween, we partner with UNICEF for children helping children. The idea of raising money for children in need was the brainchild of Reverend Clyde Allison and demonstrates to all of us how one thought can change the world.
