10 Commandments for Kids

Since starting this program several years ago, far and away our 10 Commandments craft for kids has been our most popular link through the Internet. Thousands of people have used this craft to explore the Ten Commandments meaning with their children and within their youth ministries.

As a child growing up Methodist, I was very familiar with the Ten Commandments. In fact, all my friends, whether they were Catholic, Mormon, Jehovah Witness or some other religion were familiar with them.

The 10 Commandments are an eternal rule of law and an important part of the three Abrahamic religions, Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

The biblical story of the Ten Commandments is common knowledge in Judeo/Christian societies. Moses had a personal encounter with God that culminated in physical tablets containing the Ten Commandments.

However, the meaning behind the ten commandments is not quite so well known.

When explaining the 10 commandments to your kids, in a nutshell, they are the rules for spiritually interacting with ourselves and others.

The first five commandments reflect the inner world within each of us that includes the world of Spirit, the world of thought, consciousness and putting our thoughts in order. This is the subjective part of our lives. The part that does not change within ourselves. Even though our bodies change over time, this inner part is always there. We witness our spiritual selves through our memories, our intuition and our thoughts.

The second five commandments refer to our relationship with the outer world. The objective side of our life.  Our relationships with each other. This is the part we can change. We can choose who we have around us. But, the rules for how we treat others does not change – no matter who they are.

The Universal understanding of the 10 commandments, for kids, is that it gives them a simple way to incorporate the commandments in their lives.

Even for a young child, they can understand that God is the first awareness in their life. God is the word we use here but you can also use LOVE, Divinity, Spirit or Truth. This guiding Love is what powers us forward in life through any trials. Coming from a place of love for yourself and others is the first commandment.

Second is to know that there isn’t anything else, be it belongings, people or money that is more important than Love.

The next three personal commandments are to respect this love because it is more powerful than any other force, connect with this Love in the best way you can (nature, silence, things that bring you joy) and to respect those from which you came (your parents, your family, your community.)

The last five commandments are about how you treat others. As we know, what we do to others is, Karmically, also done TO US.  In society, we have laws to maintain civility; do no hurt, lie to or steal from others. And, while we DO see others as the Divine light that each of us is, we do not envy what others have. Rather, we celebrate the uniqueness that is in each of us.

The Ten Commandments are eternally known because they are shared and adhered to through all religions and cultures.
